It's been very busy first week of kindergarten!!! We had lots of smiling faces this week! The students were excited to explore their new room and were even more excited that they didn't have to take naps!!! Below is a recap of what we did during our first week of kindergarten.
Language Arts:
The focus of language arts this week was the alphabet. Students worked on identifying different letters of the alphabet, sequencing the letters and writing letters. The class read "I Spy Letters" and practiced 'spying' different letters. They also practiced the very important ABC Song!
Math:
We started math by learning about our calendar and apple numbers. Students learned that they will be counting each day of school with an apple number. They also completed a classroom scavenger hunt to find different important items in the room. Wednesday the students started talking about how they can sort different objects. The class worked together to sort bears, blocks and different manipulatives. They also completed a paper sorting activity and sorted the papers by color. Friday the students participated in different sorting centers - sorting fruit loops by color, sorting 'scoops' of ice cream, sorting legos and sorting beads.
Literature:
We began our literature lesson by identifying the parts of the book - back/front covers, spine and pages. We sang a little song to help us remember! We also talked about what the author and illustrator do! Students read "Dinosaur Starts School" and colored pictures of themselves starting school!
Character Education:
In character education we read "What Teachers Can't Do" and made a list of student and teacher responsibilities for the new school year!
Bible Lesson:
Pastor Sarah visited us and talked to us about how we are all children of God. Students learned that God made everyone special and completed an activity about how we are all special.
Art:
In art we began learning about our hermit crabs. Mrs. Goodhart got them all out and introduced us to each one! Students were excited to see them crawl and come out of their shell. Next week they be completing a hermit crab craft.
Upcoming Events!
Friday, September 4th - Mechanicsburg School District does not have school - The Children's Garden will have a non-teaching day that day! Students may bring one toy from home for the day!
