Miss Lisa tied together social studies and math to create a fun Indian home project. In math the students have been learning about 3 dimensional shapes and in social studies they've been learning about Pilgrims and Indians. The students were given the opportunity to create a 3 dimensional Indian home with their families. In social studies Miss Lisa introduced and talked about the different Indian tribes and the types of homes they built. Instructions for building these homes was sent home and the students chose a style of home to build. The students presented their homes to the class and shared how they were built. The Indian homes will be on display, in the main lobby, until Wednesday!
Last week we read "This is the Turkey" and talked about how a turkey is prepared for Thanksgiving dinner. The children then drew the three steps important for cooking a turkey. The students had some great ideas on how to cook their turkeys! It's been another busy week in kindergarten! Thursday the children jumped and parachuted during JumpBunch while working on team work and listening skills. They "popcorned" balls and frogs with the parachute. Thursday evening was literacy night. The kindergarten room was full of many different dinosaur themed activities and the other rooms were full of activities as well! The book fair was going on in the lobby and there were yummy cookies and milk in the lunch room for everyone to enjoy!
Language Arts: This week in language arts we played sight word review games for lists 4-6. We also learned about the letter S and T. We worked on activities to review the letters and their sound. Math: We continued to review 3D shapes this week. We reviewed sphere and made a paper sphere to visualize it!We made a cone full of flowers to reinforce the cone shape and we made totem poles to learn about cylinders. Literacy: We have been reading Thanksgiving books this week! Monday we read "The Great Turkey Race" and disguised turkeys to keep them safe on Thanksgiving. We also read "This is the Turkey" and drew the steps for cooking a turkey. Social Studies: We read "Reach Out and Give" and talked about why we brought in food to give to others. The students put together the donation boxes for the food and made cards for the families. We also learned about Indian life this week through pictures and books. The students made their own Wigwams. Science: We began out unit on mammals by watching a powerpoint called "What is a mamal?" The class also worked together to fill in their "My Mammal Fact Book" and completed a mammal sorting activity. Kidwriting: Students read "Pete the Cat's First Thanksgiving" and wrote a sentence about the story. Gym: The students played a Thanksgiving tag game. Two students were the family and they were trying to tag their Thanksgiving turkey! Potato sack races were also played along with a Thanksgiving food throwing game :) Reminders!!! Indian home projects are due Monday! They will be on display in the hallway! The center will be closed Thursday, November 27th for Thanksgiving! Have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving!!!
Today Mr. Jon, aka Jonah's dad, from Pennsylvania American Water came to visit our classroom. We started our talk by listing all of the different ways we use water from brushing our teeth to watering the plants. He also talked to us about the water cycle and how it is a never ending cycle! We looked at a picture and found the different ways water was being misused and how we could correct it. Our presentation finished by talking about ways to conserve water and reduce water use. Mr. Jon brought everyone a goodie bag full of great information and fun water toys! Thank you so much for a wonderful and information visit!
It's been another busy week in kindergarten. We heard lots of stories about Halloween costumes and Halloween parties! We jumped back into our studies this week and learned a ton!
Language Arts: This week the students have been working on sight word list #5. The students did rainbow writing, white board writing and sight word tic tac toe. They have also been working on the letters O and P. They sang "I Know Some Letters I Love to Sing" and practiced their vowel sounds. Letter P was practiced with different sensory stations. Math: In math the students are learning about more, less and equal. They counted ducks and fed ducks corn to determine more or less. They drew pictures of more, less and equal and learned how to play top it. They played this game with a partner. Ask them if they can tell you the directions! Students also learned how to use a number line to determine more or less. Literature: This week we met our new author Jackie Urbanovic and read "Duck at the Door." The students were asked what they would do if a duck knocked on their door! They also determined the difference between Max, the duck from our story, and a real duck and colored pictures of real vs. make believe. We finished the week reading "Duck Soup" and illustrating the beginning, middle and end of the story. Science: We are working on a mini unit of living and non-living things. We watched a powerpoint of pictures and determined if the pictures were of living or non-living things. We made a list of characteristics of living things and did a sorting activity. We also read "What's Alive?" and looked for living things during recess. Social Studies: We discussed the feeling of sad and how we can express our sadness and how to make ourselves feel better. We also discussed the feeling scared and read "The I'm Not Scared Book." We talked about things that help to not be scared and what to do when we are scared. Kidwriting: We practiced what is a sentence and practiced writing and telling sentences out loud about pictures. Christian Ed: We learned about Psalms with Pastor Sarah and wrote one for our class. We also learned about the ten commandments and the battle of Jericho. Music: This week in music students learned about pitch. They practiced making high and low pitches with instruments and their voices. Gym: We did some warm ups related to the word Thanksgiving and played a turkey stuffing game.
