Today one of our classmate's brought in a styrofoam glider and a book about airplanes to share with the class. Everyone was very excited about flying the plane! Before we went outside we read "Airplanes and Other Flying Things" and discovered there are all different types of flying things! Then came the fun part! We went outside to the grassy area and took a seat. Everyone was lined up and ready to through the plane. Our friend who brought the plane in showed us how to use it and the different tricks it could do. We all got a chance to throw the plane. Some throws went far, some went high and some went in loops. It was fun to experiment in the different ways of throwing to see how the plane would fly. The students loved this part of our project approach and there was lots of cheering and woo-hoos during the flying time!
We recently began a project approach project on paper airplanes. After completing the KWL chart we decided that we wanted to practice throwing and aiming our airplanes. We picked an airplane design out of one of the books we got from the library. Miss Amy gave the class step by step directions on how to fold our paper airplanes. The first few folds were easy but then it got a little tricky. Everyone worked together and helped each other to get their airplanes folded and ready for flight! There were hula hoops hanging from the ceiling at different levels and the students have the opportunity to practice throwing and aiming their airplanes at the different hoops! The students loved figuring out how to throw their plane to get it to go through the hula hoops! Lots of team work, determination and excitement were evident during this part of our project! Next, we will attempt to create paper plane launchers :)
