This week in kindergarten the students and teachers have been busy preparing projects for the art show. They are very excited to show off all of their hard work! Along with art show preparation kindergarten has been moving along with their learning!
Language Arts:
Students have been practicing their phonemic awareness skills by listening and identifying individual sounds in words. You can practice this at home to reinforce this important skill! Students also read "Dinosaur, Dinosaur What Do You See?" They read it in a large group and the read with a partner and individually.
Math:
This week we began our unit on telling time by reading "Spot Tells Time." We talked about the difference between the hour and minute hand and created our own hour and minute hands. We used these when we assembled our own clocks. Through the week we practiced telling time and setting time with our own clocks. We finished the week by reading "What Time Is It?" and talking about the difference between AM and PM. Students also created a Friday schedule for AM and PM.
Literacy:
We read "The Escape of Marvin the Ape." Before reading we did a picture walk through the book and made predictions based on the pictures. After reading we created our own sequel to the book "The Escape of Helvetica the Hippo." Wednesday the students shared their illustrations with one another. We also read "Alphabet Mystery" and went on our own alphabet search. We finished the week by reading "The Mystery Hat" and voting on our favorite mystery book. The winner was "Strega Nona."
Science:
We talked about our bones this week and how the protect our organs and provide structure for our bodies. Students worked in pairs to complete a life size skeleton puzzle. We also talked about our muscles and the things they do. We learned there are three main types of muscles and practiced identifying the major muscles in our body. We finished with a muscle movement game.
Social Studies:
Students reviewed what voting means and the class held their first presidential election. Addy was elected president.
Kidwriting:
We created a story together about dinosaurs that will be displayed at the art show.
Music:
Students learned about instruments in the brass family. They made their own trumpets.
Gym:
Students played freeze dribble and practiced shooting a basket, blocking and shooting one on one.

Lots of art has been taking place this week in preparation for the art show. Students have been working on self portraits, assembling dinosaurs and creating a paper mache project!
