The first week of summer camp flew by! We had lots of fun and jumped right in with a field trip to Trindle Bowl. The summer campers enjoyed practicing their bowling skills and cheering for one another during a friendly game! We also introduced the summer campers to our new summer schedule and new summer classes including a cooking class, art class, reading, and zoology classes! Each day we start with a circle time that includes review of the date and schedule along with movement, problem of the day and a word of the week. The word for this week was "share." Every time we caught a child sharing we wrote it down and placed it in a special bucket. On Friday a note was pulled and the children sharing received a prize!
Art:
We read "If I Were a Jungle Animal" and the students created a jungle animal that they would like to be. Students also made paper snakes, painted with jungle leaves and ran fast across a piece of paper to create a cheetah. Friday the students read about zebras and created zebra marble paintings, a lion hiding in grass and a reptile coloring.
Reading:
We read "Why Do Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears?" and sequenced the events. Students practiced identifying cause and effect reactions from the story and retelling the story to the teacher. On Thursday the students re-read the story and discussed the title, setting and characters and made paper curl snakes.
Zoology:
We started zoology by making elephant toothpaste. We practiced following directions and identifying science tools along with forming a hypothesis. Afterwards students drew pictures of what happened. On Friday we watched a powerpoint about parrots. We learned lots of interesting facts about parrots and then each student created their own parrot and we flew them and had races!
Cooking:
The students made elephant face biscuits. They used two biscuits and cut one into three pieces to create the trunk and ears. They sprinkled the biscuits with cinnamon sugar and while they were baking they played an elephant trivia game. After the elephant biscuits came out of the oven the students placed chocolate chip eyes on them and enjoyed a tasty treat!!
Next week we will be diving into the ocean and learning about ocean animals!!
Reminders:
Wednesday, June 17th - Water Day!! Please have your child wear their bathing suit to school and bring a change of clothes and towel to dry off!!!!!
