This week started with an icy Monday which meant a play day in kindergarten. Classes resumed on Tuesday. It was also Pennies for Patients week. The students had a blast showing off their crazy hair, hats, princess/superhero outfits, sports clothes and pajamas.
Language Arts:
The students continued working on alliteration and rhyming this week. They reinforced these concepts by playing Duck, Duck, Goose with rhyming words and beginning sounds. Students also practiced writing a sentence with sight words and rhyming words .
Math:
Students have been working on numbers 20-40 this week. They've been practicing recognizing and writing these numbers, In honor of hat day, students created a hat and wrote the numbers on it. They played a superhero/princess matching game and reviewed numbers by throwing a ball at the wall. They had to identify the number they hit with the ball.
Literacy:
We finished our unit on fiction and nonfiction by cutting books from the Scholastic book orders and sorting them into fiction and nonfiction. We also began our unit on biographies. We learned that a biography is a nonfiction story about an individual. We read "Benjamin Franklin" and completed a three facts paper. On Friday we read Martin Luther King Jr's biography and watched a short video about him. We also traced our hands on different colored paper and glued them all into a heart to symbolize how we are all equal.
Science:
We also wrapped up our unit on animals this week. Wednesday we read "Wish for a Fish" and labeled the different parts of a fish. Thursday the students presented their animal reports. Friday the kindergartners participated in animal themed centers: build an animal with pipe cleaners, animal books, mommy and baby matching and animal memory.
Social Studies:
The students reviewed compass directions, shared their pictures of places they have visited and identified them on the map. We also read "My Town, My Country, My State" and talked about which one is bigger/smaller.
Kidwriting:
Students continued working on their creative writing this week. We practiced using a story wheel and chose two pictures to write a sentence about.
Music:
This week we talked about instruments and listened to different instrument sounds on the computer.
Christian Education:
We read about The Disciples and The Lord's Prayer.
Gym:
We practiced balancing bean bags and balls on different parts of our bodies. Students also participated in relay races.
