We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving. The kindergarten classroom is showing signs of Christmas and lots of chatter about the children's elves is being heard!
Language Arts:
The students have been working on sight word list #8 this week. They learned a new game called "Doggie, Doggie" which helped them read and learn their sight words. Word family -en is also being taught this week. Students read "Jen the Hen's Big Book" and practiced making -en words together. Students then completed an -en word web and an -en book to take home and read! On Friday, students listened to "The Little Red Hen" and then practiced reading the book with their peers!
Math:
We started the week discussing the new December calendar and the new additions to our calendar area. We are also counting down the days until Christmas. The students are learning about teen numbers this week. We started with the number 14. Students practiced writing, recognizing and creating the place value for 14. We learned a song to help us remember that 1 comes in front of all the teen numbers. Students also practiced recognizing and writing numbers 15 and 16. On Friday we reviewed the teen numbers we've talked about so far. We played two review games and completed a cut and paste activity.
Literacy:
This week we started talking about fiction and nonfiction stories. We learned that fiction is a make believe story and nonfiction is a real story. We sorted sentences as a group into fiction and nonfiction and then students worked in pairs to sort sentences and pictures. On Friday we read a fiction story, "The Biggest Snowball Ever" and learned that fiction stories have a beginning, middle and end. Students then drew something from the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Science:
We started our animal unit this week. We began by talking about everything we already know about animals and then we discovered that there are 5 animal groups. We are starting with mammals. The students watched a powerpoint about the characteristics of mammals and learned about the fastest, slowest, tallest and biggest mammal. We learned the tallest mammal is a giraffe so we measured ourselves against the height of a giraffe. The students discovered it would take 4 kindergartners stacked on top of each other to reach the height of a giraffe. We learned a song to help us remember the characteristics of mammals and made a class book. Students also worked in pairs to sort animals into mammal and nonmammals.
Health and Safety:
We read "Little Pea" and talked about healthy and unhealthy foods. Students then looked in grocery ads and cut out pictures of healthy and unhealthy foods.
Kidwriting:
We read "A Special Gift" and everyone received a gift from the story to write a sentence about.
Social Studies:
In social studies we began a unit on Christmas Around the World. We talked about what the world is and looked at a book about children around the world. Students made their own globe to take home.
Music:
The word of the week in music was pitch. Students discovered that items make high and low pitches. They listened to the different pitches of instruments and their voices. They also moved their bodies to music - high pitch standing, low pitch laying on ground.
Gym:
We completed relay races during gym class. We learned about cooperation and cheering each other on!
Next Week:
Monday 12/7 - Chapel at 9:15
Wednesday 12/9 - Field Trip to Ashcombes!
Make sure to watch the parents folders and parent board for upcoming information regarding Santa Breakfast and the class Christmas party!
