This week in kindergarten began with chapel in the sanctuary. Pastor Sarah talked to us about Advent and the importance of the color blue. We lit the first candle on the Advent wreath and talked about the season of Advent. The students have also had the opportunity to wrap presents and decorate our classroom tree this week. They have been busy getting into the holiday spirit! At the beginning of each math rotation the students are counting down the days to Christmas, opening the Advent calendar and saying a daily devotion and prayer.
Language Arts:
In language arts the students have been working on letter/sound association for the letters U and V. They reinforced vowel sounds by singing "I Know Some Letters I Love to Sing..." and completing learning stations. The students have also been reviewing sight word lists 1-6 and read "The Snowman" that was full of sight words that the children identified.
Math:
This week we finished our unit on 3D shapes. The students viewed pictures of real pyramids while learning about the shape and made their own paper pyramid. 3D shape bingo, Around the World, Guess My Shape and a shape scavenger hunt were played to reinforce 3D shapes. Friday, we began on our unit on numbers 11-19. We watched a video to show us how these numbers start with 1 and we began learning how to use tens frames.
Literacy:
The group read "The Biggest Christmas Tree Ever" and we noticed two of the characters from our Halloween stories were involved. We loved connecting the two stories and learning how they were the same and different. After reading the story each child decorated a section of the tree and they were all placed together to make a large Christmas tree in the hall! We also worked on the concepts of beginning, middle and end while reading "Mrs. Wishy Washy's Christmas."
Science:
We are beginning our study of reptiles. We viewed a slideshow of reptile facts and watched a short video talking about different types of reptiles.
Social Studies:
We read "Thank You, God - From Kids Around the World." We talked about how people around the world celebrate Christmas differently and we have to respect their differences.
Kidwriting:
We began learning about writing letters and began writing our letters to santa.
Music:
We reviewed the music terms we have learned so far and learned the song "Deck the Halls."
Gym:
This week in gym class we practiced throwing and catching. We threw presents with our friends! We also played a reindeer game and a Grinch game.
Next Week:
Tuesday 12/9 - 10:30am Popcorn Hat Players - A Christmas Carol
Please remember to mark the holiday calendar regarding your child's attendance!
