We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! We jumped right back into learning this week! We also enjoyed soccer shots on Thursday. Our word of the day was encouragement. We learned how to support and be kind to our team mates. This week Pastor Sarah talked to us about Epiphany and the three kings. The children also learned about how people wrote blessings on their doors. Pastor Sarah wrote a blessing on the school door and our classroom door. See if you child can point them out to you!
Language Arts:
We started the week by reviewing uppercase and lowercase letters and letter sounds. The students played a sound game with a partner! On Wednesday students practiced matching upper and lower case letters and completed a writing assessment on letter formation. We finished the week by learning the new sight words and rebus sentences. Students played "What's Your Word?" to help review these new words.
Math:
This week we began talking about shapes. We started with the story "Friendshape" and talked about square, triangle, rectangle and circle and completed a color by shape activity. On Tuesday we began talking about 2D and 3D shapes and sorted items by 2D and 3D. We learned that 2D shapes are flat and 3D shapes are fat! Wednesday we learned about a sphere and determined whether if it can roll, slide or stack. The students made spheres out of newspaper and tape. Thursday we talked about a cube and made a paper cube. We finished the week by reviewing cubes and spheres and writing a descriptive sentence about each shape!
Literature:
This week in literature we began our unit on biographies. We learned that a biography is a story about someone's life and is nonfiction. We determined the biographies give us information and we learn something from them! We started by reading "I Am Albert Einstein" and played a true and false game. On Wednesday we read "I Am Amelia Earhart" and created a timeline of events in her life. We also completed the writing prompt "If I Could Fly Anywhere I Would Fly To..." We had lots of fun destinations!
Science:
We began by reviewing the characteristics of mammals and jumped into reptiles. We watched a short powerpoint about reptiles and identified several different types of reptiles. On Friday we watched a short video that showed us more about reptiles and completed an activity in our science notebooks.
Kidwriting:
Using the word 'COPS' we checked our sentences. 'COPS' stands for: capital letter, overall appearance, punctuation, spelling. Ask your child if they can remember what 'COPS' stands for!!
Character Ed:
This week we talked about self control and thinking before we act. We started with our self-control song and then read "Think Before You Act." We discussed different scenarios and determined if the people used self control. Students also watched a short video about children using self-control in different situations in their classroom!
Health and Safety:
We reviewed the five food groups and practiced sorting fruits and vegetables. Students worked on the fruit and vegetable book in their food group books. They practiced identifying different fruits and veggies.
Social Studies:
This week we started talking about maps. We discussed how maps and globes are different and read "As the Crow Flies." On Wednesday we looked at a road map and a map of the United States. We worked together to make a map of our classroom.
Music:
We reviewed the different topics we learned this year: beat, tempo, pitch, speed.
