It's been a very busy week back in kindergarten. Everyone was excited to be reunited and share stories from the holidays. We jumped right back into the learning and kept everyone busy! The kindergartners also participated in Soccer Shots this week. The theme was team work and respect!
Language Arts:
This week in language arts the students reviewed the last letter of the alphabet by reading "Z is for Moose." They reviewed the sound z makes and practiced writing the whole alphabet and identifying lower case letters. This week the students began learning alliteration and initial word sounds. They practiced this by pulling things from a treasure box and identifying their beginning sound. Sight word list #9 was practiced with rebus sentences.
Math:
This week in math students reviewed numbers 11-20 with lots of fun activities. They played bingo, wrote numbers in the snow, placed numbers in order with popsicle sticks and playdough, and counted to 20 using tens frames. The students also completed a number writing assessment and identification for numbers 1-20.
Literacy:
This week we began differentiating between fiction and nonfiction stories. We began by looking at pictures of fiction and nonfiction examples and sorting them as a group. Students then completed activity with partners. We read "The Biggest Snowball Ever" and discussed why it was a fiction story and learned that fiction stories have a beginning, middle and end. We also read "Blizzards" and talked about why it was a nonfiction piece and practiced identifying facts from the story.
Science:
We read "My Many Feathered Friends" and identified and labeled the parts of a bird. We also read "Whose Nest?" and identified different animals that live in nests. Students also completed a sequencing activity for the life cycle of a bird.
Social Studies:
This week we began our map unit. We compared maps to a globe, looked at different types of maps and read "Me On a Map." We also talked about what a compass is and practiced using direction words north, south, east and west.
Kidwriting:
We reviewed what a sentence is, talked about creative writing and practiced writing a creative sentence together. Students wrote their own creative sentence about an animal.
Gym:
We practiced our self control song, jumping on a trampoline and our earth pose.
Next Week is Pennies for Patients Week. Each day has a different theme. Students are encouraged to gather spare change from home and place in the container that was sent home.
Monday - Crazy Hair Day
Tuesday - Hat Day
Wednesday - Princess/Superhero Day
Thursday - Sports Day
Friday - Pajama Day
Thursday 1/15 is Family Night Out at Hoss's.
