The school year is starting to wind down. It's hard to believe there are only 5 weeks left!! We have lots of exciting activities coming up! Please watch you folders and email for these fun announcements! The kindergartners are still actively involved in learning and eager to learn some new topics!
Language Arts:
Students practiced writing sight words by rainbow writing the words. They also practiced writing words with magic boards and making words with picture cards. The students worked in small groups to identify beginning, middle and end sounds.
Math:
We are learning about money in math class. We started the week learning about pennies and learned a little chant to remind us what a penny is worth: "Penny, Penny easy spent. Copper brown and worth one cent!" The students practiced counting pennies and used them to buy some yummy treats! Students also started learning about the nickel and reviewed how to count by 5's. The chant for the nickel is: "Nickel, nickel thick and fat. You're worth five cents. I know that!" The students have been doing a lot of work practicing counting coins and creating different amounts with the coins! We finished the week by playing money bingo! Students also received their paychecks from completing work in our classroom!! They were very excited!!!!
Literature:
This week we have been writing our own poems! We started by brainstorming a list of topics we were interested in and looked at a series of poems created by other kindergartners! On Wednesday we wrote rough drafts of our poems and on Friday we worked with Miss Amy to type our poems and decide how we wanted them laid out!
Science:
We began our unit on force and motion this week. We started by talking about the ways objects can move: up, down, around, front, back, zig zag, straight, fast and slow. We demonstrated these movements with cars. On Thursday we learned about ramps. We made predictions about which ramp would go faster, fabric or plastic, then we tested our predictions! Each group got a different result! After our testing we split into small groups and practiced building ramps for different objects; marbles, cars, trains and cylinders. The students built and tested their ramps and then recorded the information in their science notebooks.
Social Studies:
We are continuing our unit on community helpers. This week we learned about construction workers. Students created blueprints, practiced hammering and used many different types of construction tools.
Kidwriting:
Students are continuing work on their stories. The used their story webs from last week and began writing rough drafts of their stories.
Music:
In music class the students began to talk about the end of the year music activity. They discussed who would sing, dance and play instruments.
Christian Education:
Students reviewed the Fruits of the Spirit with Pastor Sarah and completed an art activity.
Gym:
Students started their baseball unit today. They focused on throwing and aiming the ball.
We had many special visitors this week for Career Days! We had visitors from the Navy Depot, a school psychologist and an engineer come and tell us what they do at their jobs! The students loved learning from our visitors and learning about exciting jobs! If anyone else would like to come in and talk to the students about their job please let a teacher know :)
