We hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend! It may have been a four day school week but it was jam packed with learning and fun! On Thursday our safety friends returned and we learned about the importance of school bus safety. The bus driver reviewed very important rules with the children: never walk in front of the bus where the driver can't see you, always sit in you seat on the bus and use inside voices at all times! On Friday we had a visit from Firefighter Rick and Firefighter Simon from the Shiremanstown Fire Department. They showed us all the parts of the fire truck. The students got to crawl through the cab of the truck and got to hear the sirens and see the lights. The students were very excited to see all of the firefighters equipment.
Langauge Arts:
This week we reviewed uppercase letters and the sounds they make. The students also started reading sight word list #2. They did a cut and paste activity matching the sight words in their rebus sentences. They also got to enjoy some sight word bingo!
Math:
We began the week by reviewing how to write numbers 0 and 1 on a writing line. They created "Zero is the Hero" and "One Dudes". Students also started learning about the numbers 2 and 3 this week. They listened to "Little 2" and practiced making a two from sticks, in rice and writing the number 2. "Little 3" was the intro for the number 3 and students played a game to match the stars on the car to the correct number spot on the parking lot. We practiced writing three as a class and on our own. Students finished the week by working on number centers for numbers 0-3. They completed a pumpkin matching puzzle, put leave on trees, rainbow writing numbers, number stampers and a dice game! Everyone had fun learning and reinforcing the numbers!
Literacy:
We read "Bad Boys Get Henpecked" and reviewed events from the beginning, middle and end of the story. The students then practiced drawing events from each part of the story. On Friday, we read "The Cheese" and enjoyed our last Margie Palatini story. Students are thinking about which story was their favorite from our Margie Palatini author study!
Science:
On Tuesday we talked about thunderstorms and how they make us feel. We read "Lightning" and learned that lightning is electricity and thunder comes from warm air in the clouds! Students got to make their own thunder by blowing into a paper bag. On Thursday we talked about things we can do on windy days! Students had lots of fun ideas! We then picked a toy and made predictions about whether it would blow in the wind or not. Students then tested their predictions and recorded their results.
Health and Safety:
We reviewed how firefighters keep us safe and learned how to keep ourselves safe if our clothes catch on fire. Everyone practiced stop, drop and roll!
Kidwriting:
Students practiced keeping their letter writing in the writing lines using the sky line, grass line and tree line.
Social Studies:
We took a break from emotions to talk about Christopher Columbus and why he is important. The students made telescopes and sailing ships! On Thursday we talked about tattling and what it is. Children were encouraged to talk to their peers to try to solve their problems before telling a teacher.
Bible Lessons:
Pastor Sarah visited and read us the story of David and Goliath. The students then made puppets of David and Goliath and practiced retelling the story with each other. She ended her time with an echo prayer.
